Overall aim of this chapter: to give the reader quick IT tips that they can use on a frequent basis. Concentrate on common packages like Word, PowerPoint and Microsoft Outlook email. Also cover other areas like the internet, files and folder management and email etiquette etc.
- An intro to computers in general practice (be brief)
- Microsoft Word tips - using headers and footers; the importance of making stuff easily readable, simple fonts, without excessive colour and whacky irritating fonts; cut and pasting shortcuts. Eitquette re: spaces after commas, full stops etc. Correct spelling mistakes because otherwise it looks like you've only put half your heart into doing the document; inserting and formating tables, inserting pictures, resizing pictures, paragraphing
- Using PowerPoint - animating; how to avoid powerpoint mania; short cut keys for presenting; being careful with sound and animation - what are you trying to achieve, is it distracting
- Folder management; organising your files; numbering files
- Email tips & etiquette - esp paying attention to grammar, spelling etc. Again, if your email looks like you've not given it much attention, they why should anyone give any attention to reading it?; how to send email to groups; how to add attachment (a note on being careful with size),how to create a distribution list; adding an email signature
- Using the calendar function in Outlook
- Syncrhonising with pdas, iphones.....imap versus pop accounts
- What web addresses mean: the http protocol
- Judging Web Validity - how, at a glance, to figure out whether a website is reliable.
- How To Do Online Searches - use of speech marks, + and - signs, being specific with your words (search guidelines). Changing the search if there are too many or too few results; google images; google scholar; looking for teaching material (eg powerpoints); searching within a website; Practice makes perfect.
