Overall aim of this chapter: to give the reader a brief and pictorial overview of all the components of nMRCGP and what each is trying to achieve (the purpose). The key here is to present your material in as easy to digest format as possible (with diagrams and flow charts etc). It needs to be concise and not information overloaded like the RCGP website. Some practical tips on how to do the assessments etc would be desirable too.
- Well, where do we start with this chapter???
- A brief reference to why we now have a GP curriculum and where to find it on the web. also reference the RCGP book on the new curriculum which makes sense of the big fat document on the web
- nMRCGP curriculum: there are different subsets to the overall curriculum
nMRCGP Curriculum by content - the knowledge part that trainees see
nMRCGP Curriculum by process - the comptencies that we (the educators) have to assess against
nMRCGP curriculum by structure: cant think of an example here - I still haven't worked out if it is a curriculum or a syllabus. I think it might be a syllabus. Check it out here
- How nMRCGP relates to Millers Pyramid
- Explaining that there are quite a few assessments inorder to enable 1. assessment of a wider coverage of comptencies and 2. triangulation
- What are the competencies; what do they mean? Particularly talking in depth about managing complexity as that is the one that most people have trouble with
- talk about each of the following in terms of a) what it is trying to assess b) the format c) key points and tips for educators in terms of helping their trainees d) common pitfalls (failures trainees make) - you'll find most of this information on the Bradford VTS nMRCGP pages

- WPBA eportfolio COT CBD DOPS PSQ MSF
- A reference to CBD, mini CEX and COT mapping documents onBradford VTS nMRCGP pages to help trainers figure out which areas are still in need of focus
- CBD question maker for trainers and consultants
- MSF - how to feedback the results and turn the session into a useful learning opportunity
- PSQ - how to feedback the results and turn the session into a useful learning opportunity
- what assessments need doing when (see document right)
- Something about Naturally Occuring Evidence (NOE): how to promote it; examples eg significant event, audit, a project, referrals analysis, prescribing analysis (and a statement to the effect that just because there is no quoted minimum evidence DOES NOT MEAN that this can be ignored. Clearly some of these things are important in the working life of a GP and therefore provision should be made for exploring these during the trainee's 18m attachment to general practice posts)
- implications for LTFTTs
- talk about minimum evidence - and a statement to the effect that trainees should be trying to achieve MUCH MORE than the quoted minimum evidence. The more assessments there are, the more reliable and valid the evidence (i.e. it triangulates better)
- Something about regularly scheduling in an assessment slot twice a week (for example) will ensure the minimum number is totally zapped. Not only that but sometimes you can hijack the session to do something else eg RCA, PCA, gask video, ALOBA, Calgary Cambridge, a tutorial, prescribing analysis session, referrals analysis session .... the list goes on
- eportfolio pearls document - ? in Appendix A
- Something about the Clinical Supervisor's Report (we recommend all clinical supervisors - hospitals and gp posts - to fill one in, not just in hospital posts as stated by RCGP. It forms a valuable document when it comes to ARCP panels)
- mention the pragmatic resources on www.bradfordvts.co.uk to help educators and trainees
