Overall aim of this chapter: to give the reader (trainers, TPDs and Assicates mainly) an idea of how to decide whether a trainee is 'trainable' and whether remedial training will make any difference.
-
The other point is to define what are the key ingredients of an effective remedial training programme.
- Something about remedial training from the trainee's perspective: the jouney they go through
- may need to change the title of this chapter as 'remedial' has negativity around it akin to being "dumb"; may be additional or extended gp training?
- general principles
- looking after the trainee - making sure they're motivated towards learning, clearing baggage, reestablishing the trainee-trainer relationship if previously harmed
- work out a shared learning agenda/educational journey - both sides
- provide a variety of teaching methods to recruit the best efforts of the various styles: both formal and interactive; ?revisit learning styles and preferences to match teaching and training to their ideal learning mode
- allow time for personal study
- encourage reflection
- allow time out of practice to build microskills eg attending external clinics/courses
- field dependant trainees: structured work, specific goals and encouragement
- field independant trainees: group activities, interprofessional learning
- build in regular review periods/appraisal to take a moment to reflect how things are: both in their professional and personal lives; and to review goals and how close you are to them and whether they need modifying in relation to new unexpected items from the 'blind spot' of JoHari's window.
- Advanced training practices (who take on remedial trainees)
- Counselling and support where necessary
- The remedial trainee's perspective: their journey and how it feels
