Overall aim of this chapter: to discuss whether handouts are really worthwhile or whether they are simply traditional. Some discussion of how to decide whether a handout is worthwhile. Also, if one does decide to do one, please write about the key ingredients that make a good handout with examples to illustrate.
- the purpose of handouts
- traditional or are they still useful?: do handouts ever get read, are they necessary; what does the research say
- the good, the bad, and the ugly: maybe examples of each
- What makes a good handout: structure, style, readability, fonts; use of pictures, tables, mindmaps, flowdiagrams, length
- the comprehensiveness vs conciseness dilemma
- key message: creating careful structure to promote retention of knowledge
- Anything else you can think of as this list is just off the top of my head.
