Overall aim of this chapter: to give the reader an idea of what we actually mean by diversity and how diverse people can be in a whole variety of ways. Mention something about stereotyping (something we all do to some extent or another) and how we must recognise this. Some of our subtle nuances (which we often don't recognise) can be negative! Give specific examples how we can be practically more embracing of diversity. Using diversity amongst learners as an opportunity to learn from each other. A particular reference to International Medical Graduates (IMGs) and the fact they live and breathe a different 'type of air' even after they have been in a different country for a number of years. We must not assume yet, for example, we provide exactly the same consultation skills training as those indigenous to this country: training where not everything is spelt out because some fundamentals are assumed. A particular reference to sexual orientation would be desirable too - how uncomfortable some learners are with their sexuality and that just because we may be totally open and accepting, they may not be at that stage for themselves! For example, at induction many educators like to have a "getting to know each other" session and some people with same sex orientations may not feel so comfortable discuss their lives as you! A thing about how to handle prejudices within a learning group (e.g to sexuality) would be helpful too.

", particular needs, having to adapt to a new country, a new society, a new language, a new social etiquette, a new infrastructure, a new way of learning and a new way of doctoring. Have we really ever realised how much they have to go through? We give them the same consultation teaching opportunities as those indiginous to the UK: is that bad because that teaching assumes some understanding of 'how the UK society works' (eg person centredness) which many IMGs will not be familiar with but most UK born are

- Sexuality - avoiding heterosexual bias in language: give examples. How in group work, do not 'OUT' individuals; remember not to assume a partner of the opposite sex; not to talk about gay people as a separate and 'alien' group eg 'they blah blah blah'; be careful with stereotyping - you will offend. Don't assume everyone in small group work is comfortable talking about sexuality
