You've probably heard by now that the UKAPD, NAPCE and UKCEA are undertaking a book project to help all educators involved in GP training.
- UKAPD - UK Association of Programme Directors
- NAPCE - National Assoc. of Primary Care Educators
- UKCEA - UK Conference of Educational Advisors
There have been so many changes in the last 3-4 years that most previous texts are heavily out of date or not comprehensive enough. We're planning to come up with a publication that will be a) relaxed in style but quite 'jazzy' visually b) practical c) comprehensive and d) tackles the common issues at the coal face. So thank you for expressing an interesting in contributing to this book which I hope will become a gold standard for GP training in the UK - and you're going to be a part of it! Although the book is being written under the banner of all three associations, you do not have to be a member in order to contribute to this book. If you want to make a contribution to GP training in the UK, please consider becoming an author of a chapter. Most chapters will only be around 10-20 sides of A4 - not much!
a) have a passion for the subject they have chosen
b) are pretty good with Microsoft Word (being able to add pictures, format and arrange layout etc)
c) feel they have time for this (you have 5 months to write the chapter)
d) who are willing to accept constructive advice
e) who can creatively present their material (eg pictures, flow diagrams, charts etc)
e) (most importantly) can write in a simple effective style - the book generally aims to help readers understand the material, not necessarily to impress them with difficult words and complex prose). Therefore a "chatty relaxed style" is just fine and preferred over a professional piece of script. The use of appropriate humour is encouraged. We want the reader to relax and enjoy their read.If this is you, please sign up - you're going to be a part of a book that will spread across the UK. Email me on rameshmehay@googlemail.com to join.
Great to have you on board.
First - take a look at the chapter headings below. You can click on each one to give you more insight into what sorts of things that chapter should include. There may be others you may want to add too - that's fine. Just let me know of your chapter plan.
Second - choose TWO chapters you have a PASSION for. We want authors to write on subjects they are passionate about. This is because you'll probably be able to write about the chapter off the top of your head AND that you'll concentrate on the things that matter at ground level. Don't worry, we're not going to ask you to write both chapters (unless you want to). The second one is in case we can't offer you the first. If you do get your first choice, then we'll probably ask you if you mind being a 'buddy' for the second chapter. What that means is that someone else will write that chapter but will send it to you for your constructive comments. We feel buddying is important as 'two heads are better than one'. You'll also have a buddy for the chapter you're contemplating. You and your buddy could, of course, simply jointly write the chapter together if you wish.
Third - drop me an email (contact details below) clearly indicating your first and second choice. Please can you also include a 25-50 word paragraph as to why you feel you would be good at writing that particular chapter. It might be related to your current role(s). For educational supervision, for instance, you might be the educational supervision lead in your patch. For educational theory, it might be that you help deliver part of the curriculum on the masters course in medical education/primary care in your region. It might be that you've done a bit of research or previous writing about the subject. It might simply be because you were until recently a novice in this field and you are therefore the best person to ask as you know what novices in the readership audience will want. Finally, it might be because of personal experience: something you recently experienced that changed the way you practice forever.
Although I've asked you to select two chapters (one of which you will write, the other you'll be a buddy for) you can choose more if you wish. Just clearly indicate which you'd like to write or be a buddy for. But do look at your own workload because we don't want to overburden you. Have you the time to take more than one chapter on? Do you need to drop something else to take this on. As it is only one/two chapters, usually of around 10 - 20 pages, we anticipate that it won't be too onerous for you.Once you've done all of this, just wait for me to compile a finalised list of chapter headings and authors/buddies.Then write away to your hearts content.
I am a 39 year old GP, GP trainer, Nurse Practitioner trainer and Programme Director in Bradford. I have been a programme director for 8 years and have been a member of UKAPD for around the same time (although it was called the ACO when I first joined). Many of you will have (hopefully) come across the website I have developed for our scheme, for GP trainees and educators nationally (www.bradfordvts.co.uk). Although I live in Leeds, you do not have to be geographically close to me in order to contribute to the book. Hopefully we can do it all via email.
Please consider coming to the next UKAPD conference and we can chat in person if you'd like. The conference is for all GP educators and provides space where we can chat, network, exchange ideas, make new aquaintances and have lots of fun in usually beautiful relaxed surroundings. The next one is in a castle in Durham! (and most Deaneries will reimburse the costs) Click here to find out more.
